Title:


On homology theories of digraphs and quivers and their computability



Abstract:


This talk will be presented with a general scientific audience in mind. No background in topology is required. I will begin by motivating the computation of the homology of spaces using simplicial complexes and the persistent homology of filtered spaces using filtered simplicial complexes. Further, I will explain why we might be interested in studying and applying similar theory for graphs and directed graphs. The later part of the talk will provide an overview of some of my work with singular simplicial homologies of quivers and path homology of directed graphs.



Bio:


Matthew Burfitt joined HIMIS as an Assistant Professor in 2026. He earned his PhD in Mathematics at the University of Southampton in 2017 and held research positions at Southampton, the University of Aberdeen and BIMSA. His research spans algebraic topology and topological data analysis, with a focus on computing homology of digraphs and quivers and applications to artificial intelligence.
